Application for a Site of Community Importance (pSIC) for the reproduction of Cobice Sturgeon in the Ticino River approved!

The LIFE Ticino Biosource Project reaches another very important milestone.

On March 23, 2020 the Lombardy Region approved, with the D.G.R. No. 2972, the candidacy of the site called “Reproductive sites of cobice sturgeon” to pSIC.

This approval, which includes as an area a stretch of the riverbed of the Ticino river in the province of Pavia, bears in itself a character of uniqueness, considered the residence of an isolated population of Cobice sturgeon (Acipenser naccarii) in the river.

Precisely for this reason, the Valle del Ticino Regional Park has proposed the candidacy of the site within the Natura 2000 Network, in order to implement appropriate activities to protect sturgeon and defend it from the critical risk of extinction.

This proposal saw the collaboration of the project partner GRAIA, carrying out the monitoring of the species and preparing all the necessary technical documentation.

This candidacy also acts as an implementation action of the Action Plan for the management of Acipenser naccarii, already adopted by the Lombardy Region with the D.G.R. 6308 of 2007.

The proposal was sent to the Ministry of the Environment and the Protection of the Territory and the Sea for their follow-up.
