Objectives

The project has the main aim to preserve and enhance the heritage of biodiversity of Ticino Park, source area of biodiversity for the all Padana Plain, since it hosts important populations of most of the species of conservation interest of this geographic area.

Then Park was declared as Biosphere Reserve according to UNESCO MAB programme and it represents a key area for the biodiversity of Northern Italy. Ticino River is  actually the most important ecological corridor that links the Alps with the Apennines, favoring the migration and the expansion of many species, that could move freely in this large protected area.

Specific objectives are the preservation of target species of different taxa, from insects to Vertebrates, and are regularly present in the Park. They are all designated as “Species of Community Interest” inserted in Annexes of the Habitat (92/43/CEE) and Birds (2009/147/CEE) Directives and two of them are considered priority species: Adriatic Sturgeon (Acipenser naccari) and Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca). Another species of great importance is Beluga Sturgeon (Huso huso), a fish that has been practically extinct in the Adriatic Basin in the last 30 years; the project aims to its reintroduction.
