“Vasche dell’Arno” monitoring – Target species: Aythya nyroca, Aythya ferina, Aythya fuligula, Himantopus himantopus, Fulica atra atra (nesting); Casmerodius albus, Egretta garzetta, Nycticorax nycticorax, Ardea purpurea, Circus aeruginosus, Milvus migrans, Porzana porzana, Porzana parva, Luscinia svecica, Gallinago gallinago, Anas strepera, Anas querquedula, Actitis hypoleucos, Trusinga glareola migratrices.

Up to February 2019 ex ante monitoring was conducted, then from March to August 2019 ex post monitoring was conducted with a frequency of 15 days for a total of 32 monitoring per year, conducted through 117 field trips. In the ex post monitoring, 6 target species of Community interest were recorded in the Vasche del Torrente Arno area. The breeding species are as follows: Aythya nyroca, Himantopus himantopus, Aythya ferina, Aythya fuligula, Fulica atra atra, Anas strepera.

The monitoring concerns the bird species present in the intervention areas related to Action C2. The activity began on January 1, 2017 and is regularly underway. From June 2017 to September 2018, monitoring took place every 15 days, through 69 field trips. The monitoring concerned both the two areas of intervention and eight other areas in which no interventions are planned, this in order to achieve a classification of the birdlife overall present in the ecosystem of the Arno Torrent pools.
In total, 24 species of Community interest have been surveyed, in areas of intervention and in areas of non-intervention, of which 9 are target species of the LIFE project. A further 30 species of conservation interest on a European scale were also classified, classified as SPEC – Species of European Conservation Concern (BirdLife International 2017), 6 of which classified as top priority (SPEC 1).

In January 2017, the monitoring of wintering birdlife in the Arno River Basins (C2) was started by FLA. The action is very important to evaluate the effectiveness of the interventions of Action C2, in particular in favor of birds of conservation interest (Aythya nyroca, Aythya ferina, Aythya fuligula, Himantopus himantopus, Fulica atra atra, Casmerodius albus, Egretta garzetta, Nycticorax nycticorax, Ardea purpurea, Circus aeruginosus, Milvus migrans, Porzana porzana, Porzana parva, Luscinia svecica; Gallinago gallinago, Anas strepera, Anas querquedula, hypoleucos Actitis, Tringa glareola, Anthus pratensis.). Selection and assignment activities were carried out for the monitoring of birdlife; fortnightly monitoring of birdlife at the “Tanks of the Arno stream” site and surrounding areas; distribution of cards for the signaling of target species of the project. Monitoring is in progress.
